Mexico's best kept secret?
Real Mexican Food!

Mercado Abelardo L. Rodriguez. It is a traditional market in the historic center, but more like a museum of beautiful murals found on it’s entrances and walls by national and international artists from the 1930s all commissioned by Diego Rivera. It even has a massive relief mural by Isamu Noguchi on a hidden second floor in the market.

Also the public art throughout the Conjunto Habitacional Unidad Independencia in San Jerónimo Lídice. There are beautiful mosaic murals and artistic works by Luis Ortiz Monasterio, Federico Cantú Garza, Alejandro Prieto, Francisco Eppens, Pedro Miret, Ernesto Tamariz and Juan O'Gorman. It was inaugurated on September 20, 1960 and I’ve heard rumors that President John F. Kennedy was at the inauguration. Also, the concrete play structures there are BANANAS. My son had therapy near here twice a week so I would crane my neck looking at the murals as we would drive by. Finally three Mexican friends steeped in the architecture and design world told me what I was seeing hidden in this public housing complex — that this amazing art was all there in plain sight — amazing!

(I don’t drink, but if I did it would be…) huevos rancheros for sure.
