Favorite Mexican dish?
Huauzontles. It’s a herb native to Mexico that’s pounded into a little torta and then bathed in tomato sauce. I think the English approximate is lambsquarters, which doesn’t have a very logical name does it? Lambs that are quartered …
Mexico's best kept secret ?
Speaking of quartered lambs though, there is an amazing barbacoa place in Mexico City. It’s definitely the best kept secret since my sister Marina, who takes me there each time, doesn’t know the name’s place, couldn’t even tell you where it is, she only knows HOW to get there. It’s in a popular neighborhood with a labyrinthian street design so I’ve never learnt the way. Nonetheless, the barbacoa is amazing. It’s cooked in banana leaves for days and ends up incredibly juicy and aromatic.
“He stepped down, trying not to look long at her, as if she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking”. - Tolstoy, Anna Karenina
I always try to prevent it and drink tons of water before going to sleep. But if worst
comes to worst - a liter of water first thing in the morning, chilaquiles verdes and a steam room!
Your best skill?
Probably being just interested enough in a myriad of things. Or cultivating my relationships with the people I love.
What do you wish you could find from Mexico in NY?
Favorite instagram account to follow?
Right now I’m unhealthily obsessed with Erik Madigan Heck’s instagram. He’s a wonderful photographer and the photos he’s taken of his beautiful wife and two little sons are stunning pieces of classical art. What I enjoy the most, however, are his and his wife’s instagram stories (I’m obviously following the full family now) because they can either be snippets of dark family comedy or poignant commentary on world news. I don’t know how to ask them to adopt me without seeming insane. @erikmadiganheck
